Long post ahead…….I was just discharged today after a hardware removal from my original surgery from 10 years ago.

Pros: Dr. Tomescu is personable and knowledgeable. Coupled with the fact he is a professor at U of T solidifies that he is an expert in his field. When I remove the dressing I’m sure I will see that he cut down the same scar to minimize scarring.

Anesthesiologists: were able to shift on a dime as I requested a spinal block from my fear of General anesthesic. They were not prepared for this but four of them came to my aid to ensure they could accommodate.

Nurses JP and (darn I can’t remember her name but she has strawberry blonde hair and is from the East coast) were soooo accommodating. I was a very high maintenance patient due to my rational and irrational fears around surgery. I was brought multiple heated blankets and provided with a personal air blowing heater and just generally soothed over and beyond. I’m sure they were happy when I was discharged!

Cons: the booking office seemed irritated that I wasn’t able to take the first and second appointments that were offered. It is more complex than simply booking a dentist appointment and I needed time to arrange a replacement at work. I was threatened to be removed from the list if I didn’t take the last appointment offered. I wish they were able to book appointments father in advance. This may be a systematic issue not associated with Dr Tomescu’s office.

I didn’t have a pre-op appointment in person, so I wasn’t able to acquire the antibacterial soap nor prepare the surgical team with my anesthesia choices in advance.

Recently had a high tibial osteotomy surgery on January 2nd with Dr.Tomescu & his team. They were all very supportive & skilled. A special thanks to my nurse Jason MacDonald on the 3rd floor, he was wonderful & incredibly kind. He made the beginning stages of my recovery more tolerable. Over all everyone at Sunnybrook was 10/10.

Your professional skills and the personal effort you put in. The night was a rough nite the oxygen meter was dislodged from the stand then the slam was going off each time you came in my room and fixed it , I peed whole night you helped each time

been attending this hospital for 5 years, with knee replacements , my past visit, I had not been in a year, they used to just have you lay your health card or hospital card on the counter under the glass, I did this , this time and the receptionist with the large yellow glasses sitting on the right, was so rude, she looked at it and me and said , what is YOUR name, , and who are you to see ? She was so rude, I started to pull my card away and she stated , I need that still. I have never been greeted so rudely as she gave me the X-ray form , I walked away and she proceeded to share how i just laid the card in front of her, to her co worker !! I was still standing there putting my card away, I could see and hear it.. Upstairs the X-ray were not the friendly staff that they used to be, reception, requisition form... Even staff in the rapid access clinic who I know and they know me, not even a smile.. What has happened I have had a few surgeries over the years and never have I felt this rudeness .... Reaching out to patient experience, they NEVER reply or follow up.. Was a very disappointing day. Took the smile right off my face !

For 30 Years +/- this facility and these people have worked to be the very best @ what they do. From consultation through recovery they have mapped a proven and improving process that allows their team and patient's to work through the challenges of orthopaedic replacements collaboratively. They know what to do and they share the tools of/for success with the patient. THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST EXAMPLE OF HOW TO APPLY SOCIALIZED HEALTH CARE FOR THE BEST OUTCOMES. Standing ovation (on my new knee) for a team of professionals who have dedicated themselves to proactively and progressively healing the people under their care and have avoided the temptation to simply "administer medical practices" that are good enough to justify their jobs. These people have given themselves to the idea that each and every one of them can make differences in the outcomes of their patients and in the system of which they are each a crucial part. I had another surgery on my heel. Again, all staff were so nice to take care of me. Especially Sanela, the nurse at the recovery unit in 3rd floor was AMAZING! She tried her best to take care of me. She was so kind and her way of speaking was very clear. She even provided me with the typed prescription for our information. Thanks Sanela for your amazing care!!!

I had a kneecap reconstruction surgery and stayed overnight at Holland centre as I was not feeling well. Most of the staff members from the surgery team to the recovery team were very friendly and tried to accommodate me as much as possible. Especially Julia, the overnight shift nurse was very conscientious and made me feel I'm safe. She always responded to me nicely and provided what I needed. Thank you for your caring, Juliana!

I had a total knee replacement revision by Dr. Chaudhry just last month. I was treated with respect and dignity by all the staff. I could not have asked for better results or a better place to be. I wish I had the original knee replacement done here, because they treated me, the patient, and not just my knee, which resulted in a much better experience as well as a better result. My experience at The Holland Centre was all positive. Thank you to everyone, as it was completely a team effort.

What an amazing process. From first visit to post op. Concentrate on a few things and do the well, instead of some of everything. Best way to run a successful surgery unit.
